In Darkness it Waits presented a unique opportunity, as we were tasked with creating an animated trailer from scratch for an upcoming fantasy novel. Our process began with scripting and storyboarding, and evolved through all stages of motion graphics, including highly rendered settings created in Blender that brought to life the surreality and originality of the author’s vision. Using a blend of 2D and 3D multiplaning, camera flies through an eerie backyard on a rainy night, and into a child’s bedroom. From under his bed, a brilliant blue portal transports us to sweeping mountainscapes, fiery bridges over a pool of lava, and a snowy landscape ruled by a woolen ice monster. As the action climaxes, a scarecrow flashes across the screen, swiping us to main title.
